What’s in Store: Behind the Scenes at Chippenham Museum
Open Monday to Saturday until 23 April 2019
A rare opportunity to view objects from the museum stores and find out about what happens behind the scenes to care for Chippenham Museum’s collection of over 35,000 objects. This exhibition is free to visit and open Monday to Saturday from 1 February to 23 April, including Bank Holidays. A museum has many functions, but at the heart of all they do is their collection. Objects can link us to the past and make us think about present. They can generate a sense of place, ownership and identity. Through them we can better understand the world around us and ultimately ourselves. But to do this, museums must balance caring for its collections while ensuring they remain accessible to all. Museums must also be living and responsive places, adding to and developing their collections and how they use them, to remain relevant to society today. This exhibition shows some of the hidden activities that go on behind the scenes at Chippenham Museum to ensure its collections are cared for to be enjoyed by current and future generations. Enjoy a series of lunchtime talks as part of this exhibition focusing on a different museum object each week. These bite sized talks will explore the objects on display and how they help our understanding of the past. There will also be opportunities to enjoy tours of the museum stores. For further details please contact the museum or visit the museum’s website. Chippenham Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm. The museum, a Chippenham Town Council Facility, is free to enjoy with two floors of galleries to explore.
